Split a list into teams, fairly, in about ten seconds
Paste the names you have, choose a number of teams (or a team size), and generate. Everyone is shuffled first, then dealt one at a time across the teams, so sizes never differ by more than one person and nobody can claim the split was rigged.
What this one does that basic pickers do not
- Captains first: mark a captain with * before their name and captains are spread one per team.
- Keep together / keep apart: keep siblings or co-captains together, or keep two people apart, and the generator retries until the rules hold. If they cannot all hold, it says so instead of quietly ignoring them.
- Teams get real names: every split can be auto-named from our curated team name lists.
- Copy or print cleanly: one click copies the full result for WhatsApp, Slack, Teams or email, and the print view contains nothing but the teams.
- Private by design: your list is processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared.

Who uses it
Teachers splitting a class into project groups, coaches picking pickup and scrimmage sides, PE staff, workshop facilitators making breakout groups, trivia hosts seating tables, and managers randomizing draft order.
How the split stays fair
The generator uses a Fisher-Yates shuffle powered by your browser’s cryptographic random source, which makes every possible order equally likely. It then deals the shuffled list round-robin: first name to Team 1, second to Team 2, and so on. That is the same method card dealers use, and it is why team sizes stay within one of each other even when your list does not divide evenly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the random team generator free?
Yes. No sign-up, no daily limit, no watermark on printed results.
Can I split by team size instead of number of teams?
Yes. Switch “Split by” to “People per team” and the tool works out how many teams you need, balancing any remainder.
What happens with duplicate names?
Exact duplicates are removed by default (you can turn this off). If two different people share a name, add an initial, for example “Sam R.”
Are my students’ or players’ names stored anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and the list is gone when you close the tab.
Can I keep certain people together or apart?
Yes, add one pair per line in the keep-together or keep-apart boxes.
We have our teams. How do we name them?
Use the Team Name Generator: pick your team type and style, shortlist favorites, and let the team vote.
