The fairest way to choose

Some choices are too small to argue about and too important to rig. Who presents first, whose name comes out of the hat for the prize draw, who answers the next question in class, who plays Santa this year, who captains the team on Saturday: every group has a moment where the only fair answer is a genuinely random one. Paste the list, let the picker land where it lands, and the decision is done. Nobody chose a favourite, nobody can claim it was fixed, and the loser cannot demand a recount, because the whole group watched it happen.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your names in the box, one name per line. Duplicates are removed automatically, and the count under the box always shows how many names are ready.
  2. Choose how many names to pick: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10.
  3. If every name should only come up once, like a prize draw or taking turns in class, tick “Remove picked names from the list”.
  4. Press Pick. Copy the winners with Copy picked names, pick again, or press Reset draw to put every name back in.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really random?

Yes. Every pick uses the cryptographic random number generator built into your browser, the same kind used for security, not a predictable pattern. No name is weighted or more likely than any other, and your list never leaves your device.

Can I pick more than one name?

Yes. Choose 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 names per pick. Names are never repeated inside a single pick, so picking 3 always gives you 3 different names.

Does it remove names after picking?

Only if you tick “Remove picked names from the list”. With it ticked, each winner leaves the draw, so repeated picks work like names coming out of a hat: everyone gets picked before anyone gets picked twice. Unticked, every pick starts again from the full list. Press Reset draw at any time to put everyone back in.

Need teams or groups instead?

If one winner is not enough and you need the whole list split fairly, use the Random Team Generator for teams or the Random Group Generator for classroom groups.
